How We Do It
Think of Backpocket HR like a compact Human Resources
We’re a non-traditional HR firm for non-traditional companies.
Designed to meet the needs of small and
Backed by two decades of HR experience, we can assemble expert teams to deliver tailored advice and solutions for virtually every HR challenge and opportunity.
Our Services
At Backpocket HR, we think and do: helping companies like yours support people, build teams and successfully manage the challenges and opportunities that come with change and growth.
Changing Circumstances
New business opportunities. Expanding operations. Adding talent. Succession planning.
Even comparatively small changes can have a major impact on your company. We’ll help you establish people programs that line up with the kind of business you want to build. We can advise you on selection and hiring practices, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and building teams that collaborate and work effectively to meet your goals.
Managing Employee Incentives
Competitive compensation. Attractive benefits. Alternative perks and encouragement.
No company can just keep giving people raises. It’s not affordable and it’s not effective. We keep an eye on the marketplace and evolving best practices to help your company design and implement sustainable compensation and benefits that attract and retain talent and drive performance.
Driving Performance
Setting goals. Evaluating engagement. Delivering results.
We are performance management experts. Whether it’s providing tools and structures or working with employees and teams on a one-to-one basis, we can help you handle performance issues and ensure you’re supporting people to do their best for your company.
Legislative Compliance
Keeping current. Monitoring changes. Assessing impacts.
Employee and workplace-related legislation – federal, provincial and municipal – is continually changing, but we’re on top of it. So don’t worry, we can keep you informed about relevant legislative changes, advise on their impact, and provide tools and services that allow you to meet your obligations as an employer.
Resolving Conflicts
Identifying challenges. Providing support. Resolving problems.
At the best of times, managing people is never easy. When complex challenges arise – and they will – we can help get your people, your team and your company back on track. And, to do what’s right for your business, we can advise you on making tough choices and implementing them in the right way.
Our Clients
Backpocket HR enjoys many long-lasting, mutually rewarding relationships with our clients. Often we’re called in on a single issue and, in case after case, we find we're called back, helping our clients with solutions and strategies for HR matters as well as a wide range of business challenges.
Backpocket HR’s owner-operator set-up, for me, is a real plus. You’ve got the owner guiding you, and Georgia’s got a lot of experience. Plus it’s a really neat business model… outsourcing HR just seems such an obvious 21st-century way of working.
BaAM Productions
Annemarie Roe, President
Our company was growing. We had payroll, but we didn’t necessarily have an HR department. And so we went the route of establishing a relationship with Backpocket HR. And although we now have in-house people demarcated as HR, we continue to use Georgia – as a mentor to our HR team and as a sounding board on many issues – because I feel she brings a lot to the table.

The breadth and depth of knowledge that Backpocket HR can bring to the table are outstanding. I’ve worked with other external HR providers who have advised on very specific things, but in terms of generalist HR, she’s far and away the best I’ve ever dealt with.

Small to mid-sized businesses like The Works typically run a lean management team, and usually don’t have HR expertise. Backpocket HR has that expertise – they are up to speed on what’s going on in the business world and the HR world. And, equally important, on a human level, they’re the kind of people you want to be dealing with when you need help managing the complicated issues around HR in a small firm.

We were probably a dozen people when we began working with Backpocket HR, and now we’re several hundred people across the country… Georgia has been involved in our business planning process and is accountable for our HR, our people and our culture – working with our team leads. Backpocket HR has been an incredible resource for us.
